Description :
Cefixime & Ofloxacin belongs to a class of medications called antibiotics. Specifically, it is a combination of a cephalosporin (Cefixime) and a fluoroquinolone (Ofloxacin), both of which are used for the treatment of a wide range of bacterial infections. These infections include those affecting the skin, ears, lungs, prostate, and urinary tract. In addition, this combination therapy is effective in treating conditions like typhoid fever and sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) such as chlamydia and gonorrhoea.
What is a Bacterial Infection?
A bacterial infection occurs when harmful bacteria enter the body, multiply, and release toxins that can damage tissues and disrupt normal bodily functions. These infections can lead to various diseases, including :
- Strep throat
- Urinary tract infections (UTI)
- Bacterial food poisoning
- Gonorrhoea
- Bacterial meningitis
- Cellulitis
- Lyme disease
- Tetanus
However, Cefixime + Ofloxacin is ineffective against viral infections, such as the flu and common cold. These infections are caused by viruses, not bacteria, and require different treatments.
Bacterial Infections Treated with Cefixime + Ofloxacin
The combination of Cefixime + Ofloxacin is highly effective against a variety of bacterial infections, including :
- Skin Infection : Such as cellulitis, impetigo, and abscesses.
- Ear Infection : Such as otitis media (middle ear infection).
- Lung Infection : Including pneumonia and bronchitis.
- Prostate Infection : Like prostatitis.
- Urinary Tract Infection (UTIs) : Affecting the kidneys, bladder and urethra.
- Typhoid Fever : Caused by Salmonella Bacteria.
- Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STD) : Including chlamydia and Gonorrhea.
Mechanism of Action :
The combination of Cefixime (a cephalosporin antibiotic) and Ofloxacin (a fluoroquinolone antibiotic) works by targeting different mechanisms within the bacterial cell to prevent their survival and multiplication :
- Cefixime : interferes with the synthesis of the bacterial cell wall. This structure is crucial for bacterial survival and without it, the bacteria become unstable and die.
- Ofloxacin : inhibits the bacteria’s ability to replicate DNA, which prevents further bacterial reproduction.
Together, these antibiotics prevent the formation of the bacterial cell wall and disrupt other essential processes, weakening and ultimately destroying the bacteria. This makes Cefixime + Ofloxacin a broad-spectrum antibiotic effective against both gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria.
Contraindications :
It is contraindicated in patients with a history of hypersensitivity to cefixime or/and ofloxacin.
Pharmacokinetic Properties :
Absorption :
- Cefixime : Well absorbed orally; peak plasma concentration occurs in 2-6 hours; food slightly delays absorption.
- Ofloxacin : Also well absorbed; peak plasma concentration occurs in 1-2 hours; food may slow absorption but doesn’t significantly affect overall absorption.
Distribution :
- Cefixime : Widely distributed in the body, including the lungs, middle ear, and urine; 65% protein-bound.
- Ofloxacin : Widely distributed in tissues, including the lungs, kidneys, and prostate; about 25-30% protein-bound.
Metabolism :
- Cefixime : Not extensively metabolized, primarily excreted unchanged in the urine.
- Ofloxacin : Partially metabolized in the liver; a large proportion remains unchanged.
Elimination :
- Cefixime : Excreted mainly unchanged in urine, with about 50% of the dose eliminated in 24 hours.
- Ofloxacin : Primarily excreted unchanged in urine, with a minor fraction eliminated in feces.
Half-Life :
- Cefixime: The half-life is typically 3-4 hours, but can extend up to 9 hours in some individuals.
- Ofloxacin: The half-life ranges from 4-7 hours.
