Description :

Cefixime Trihydrate belongs to the cephalosporin group of antibiotics. It is used to treat a variety of bacterial infections in children and adults. Cefixime fights bacteria in the body and helps relieve symptoms like fever, sore throat, and pain caused by infections such as bronchitis, throat infections, and urinary tract infections. Your symptoms may get better before the infection is completely treated. Cefixime will not treat a viral infection such as the common cold or flu.

Indications and usage :

Pharmacodynamics :

Cefixime trihydrate, an antibiotic, is a third-generation cephalosporin like ceftriaxone and cefotaxime. Cefixime is highly stable in the presence of beta-lactamase enzymes. As a result, many organisms resistant to penicillins and some cephalosporins due to the presence of beta-lactamases, may be susceptible to cefixime. The antibacterial effect of cefixime results from inhibition of mucopeptide synthesis in the bacterial cell wall.

Mode of Action :

Cefixime, like other beta-lactam antibiotics, works by targeting the bacterial cell wall.

It binds to special proteins in the bacteria called penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs). These proteins help build the cell wall by completing the final step in its structure (called the transpeptidation step) :

• The bacteria can’t build a strong cell wall.
• This weakens the bacteria and causes the cell wall to break.
• The bacteria then burst and die, a process helped by natural enzymes inside the bacteria called autolysins.
